Flavio Manenti is Professor of Chemical Plants at Politecnico di Milano (Dipartimento di Chimica, Materiali e Ingegneria Chimica “Giulio Natta”), where he coordinates the Centre for Sustainable Process Engineering Research (SuPER) with 12 permanent staff, 15+ researchers and 20+ collaborators and industrial advisors.
As the recicpient of Alexander von Humboldt award for Senior Scientist in 2014, he has been Professor of Chemical Plants and Operations at Technical University of Berlin and, formerly, he was Professor of Chemical and Nuclear Engineering at Tomsk Polytechnic University (Russian Federation).
He has been elected for two terms (2015-2017 and 2017-2019) as one of the 6 academic Charity Trustees at European Federation of Chemical Engineering (EFCE, www.efce.info) and for two mandates (2018-2021 and 2021-2024) as President of Computer Aided Process Engineering (CAPE, www.wp-cape.eu), EFCE’s Working Party. He is member of Executive Board of Italian Association of Chemical Engineering (AIDIC) since 2014.
Since 2023 and for a 4-years mandate, he is Ministry Delegate for energy strategy at the Ministero dell’Ambiente e della Sicurezza Energetica (MASE) with main focus on sustainable fuels.
He is member of DAAD (Germany) and CNPq (Brasil) for the coordination of European mobility and the assessment of scientific projects and since 2024 he is member of the scientific board of the CHASE Competence Centre in Linz (Austria, www.chasecenter.at) for advances in sustainability.
He coordinates Double PhD and MSc bilateral agreements with USA, UK, EU, CH, China, Russian Federation, Brazil, Canada. He published 400+ papers indexed by Scopus on peer-reviewed journals and well-established international conferences, along with a series of 5 books titled “… for the Chemical Engineer” edited by Wiley-VCH (Weinheim, Germany) on process systems engineering, modeling and optimization of chemical processes. He co-authored a chapter of Kirk-Othmer Encyclopedia by John Wiley and Sons on big data analytics in chemical processes.
Research consultant for the main gas, oil and petro/chemical companies, he has active cooperation with Saipem, Sinopec, KBR, Eni, Sibur, South Korea Innovation, HBI Group, A2A, Itelyum Regeneration, ITT, Capwatt, Techint Group with about 45 M€ investments generated in the last 5 years.
Owner of patents and trademarks for transition technologies (processes and proprietary items) in the field of sustainable fuels and CO2 utilization, he transferred to the industry several applied technologies for the conversion of plasmix and tyres into fuels and lubricant bases as well as he founded spinoff for commercialize new processes supporting the industries in the basic engineering design, the front-end engineering design, the construction and commissioning and the opyimal monitoring.
In free time, he is active UEFA-licensed soccer coach with two national championships and 6 regional championships awarded and Federal soccer coach for the U13 National Team (SGS FIGC Italia).
